Lucky Thirteen

It is awkward to juggle angry people. Emme knew that better than anyone.

On Monday morning Trish was still giving Emme and Lizzie the silent treatment. She hadn’t gotten over anything. And Lizzie was giving Emme plenty of space after their blow-up at Emme’s apartment on Friday.

So at lunchtime Emme sat by herself at the yellow table while Trish went to the green table and Lizzie sat at the orange table. Lunch was pretty much the only time they could really socialize, and they still had to prepare for their project. But in order to do that, they needed to be speaking to each other.

That stupid project, Emme thought. It was easier to blame it for the source of all this conflict instead of the actual reasons.

The social studies teacher, Mr. Durke, said the threesome—despite personal grievances—would have to complete the Sisters Across Time project together as assigned, no matter what. He absolutely wouldn’t accept a last-minute change of any kind. So they had to figure out a way to make peace.

When Emme went to use the restroom after lunch, she got her chance. There was Trish, washing her hands.

“Hey,” Emme said when she saw her.

“Oh, hey,” Trish said without her usual enthusiasm.

“Trish,” Emme said and then stopped and peered under the stalls. She wanted to make sure they didn’t have an audience. “Good, we’re alone. Look, I’m sorry for what Lizzie said and did. She was wrong to say that stuff. And I should have called you this weekend, but I was sort of—”

“You have no idea how much Lizzie hurt my feelings,” Trish cut in. She tossed her paper towel in the garbage and met Emme’s eyes in the mirror.

“I know she said you hadn’t done as much work on our project,” Emme said. “That was kind of mean.”

“It was!” Trish said. “But she also said some other stuff. And she texted me too.”

“What other stuff?” Emme asked.

“She sent me a text, but I think she meant to send it to you,” Trish said. “I didn’t tell you before because I was so mad.”

Emme felt a lump in her throat. Uh-oh. “What did the text say?”

“It said, ‘What is her prob she is sooooo annoying ALL THE time,’” Trish said in her best Lizzie impression.

Emme shook her head. “Ugh,” she said. “Look, I know Lizzie talks and obviously texts too much and sometimes things come out of her mouth—and thumbs—before she thinks.”

“No, she’s just mean,” Trish shook her head. “And she told on me.”

“Told what?” Emme was beginning to realize that the most recent argument was just the tip of the iceberg. It sounded like there had been a lot of reasons for Trish to get upset. Maybe Lizzie was more in the wrong than Emme thought.

“Remember I was telling you about that boy in my apartment building, the one I see in the elevator? Bryan?”

Emme nodded. She wondered where this conversation was headed.

”Well, Lizzie saw Bryan by the locker rooms, and she told him that I liked him! So Bryan’s twin sister—you know her, right? Molly? She’s in our science.
